Module 01 Activity
Scenario
You have inherited a set of charts someone else built, and been asked whether they are any good.
What you build
A critique of five real charts, with the question each answers and a rewritten takeaway sentence for each.
Steps
- For each chart, write the single question it answers. Mark any that answer none, and any where a sentence would have done.
- Write the action each chart prompts. Mark any that prompt none, and decide whether that is legitimate context or a defect.
- List every decorative feature and say what the reader can do afterwards that they could not before. Delete anything that fails.
- Show one chart to three colleagues and ask them the questions it should answer. Record the answers, not their opinions.
- Rewrite each title as a takeaway sentence containing a figure.
- Say which of the five you would delete outright, and why.
Evidence to hand in
- The five charts with the question each answers.
- The prompted action for each, with context charts labelled.
- The decoration audit with deletions.
- Three readers' answers to one chart's questions.
- Five rewritten titles.
- The deletion recommendation.
Review checklist
- Every chart has a question written above it, or is marked as answering none.
- The reader test records answers, not opinions.
- At least one decorative feature is identified and removed.
- Every rewritten title contains a figure and makes a claim.
- The recommendation includes at least one deletion, or argues why none is warranted.
