Data Visualization and Dashboard Storytelling

Module 04 Activity

Scenario

The comparison is decided. Now choose the chart that makes it easiest to read.

What you build

A comparison chart set: correctly sorted, correctly baselined, with the change drawn rather than computed by the reader.

Steps

  1. Sort every categorical chart by the value the question asks about. Note any where a natural order should be preserved instead.
  2. Check every bar chart's baseline and fix any that are truncated.
  3. Find one before-and-after comparison in your set and rebuild it as a slope chart. Compare how quickly the change is visible.
  4. Find any chart with more than ten categories and rebuild it as a dot plot. Report the difference in ink.
  5. Find any ranked list and add the underlying values. Report the largest and smallest gaps between adjacent ranks.
  6. Say which ranks in that list are separated by rounding error.
