Data Visualization and Dashboard Storytelling

Module 12 Activity

Scenario

Assemble the charts into something a reader takes a finding from without touching anything.

What you build

A dashboard with one number and its comparison at the top, a deliberate reading order, and only charts that support a clause of the summary.

Steps

  1. Write the summary sentence first. List its clauses.
  2. Map every candidate chart to a clause. Do not build anything that maps to none, and list what you deliberately excluded.
  3. Put one number and its comparison - a target, a previous period, or both - at the top.
  4. Place the charts by reading order, keeping everything the argument depends on above the fold.
  5. Check every filter state a reader could reach and constrain the ones that produce meaningless samples.
  6. Arrange to measure whether it is opened a second time.
