Data Visualization and Dashboard Storytelling

Module 13 Activity

Scenario

The capstone: a dashboard that supports one decision, critiqued against the checklist and tested on real readers.

What you build

A complete dashboard story - brief, charts mapped to clauses, a self-critique, a reader test and a handover naming what would overturn the finding.

Steps

  1. Write the brief around the decision, with a summary sentence containing a figure and an explicit list of what the dashboard will not show.
  2. Map every chart to a clause of the summary. Report any clause with no chart and any chart with no clause.
  3. Run the eight-point checklist against every chart and fix what fails.
  4. Test with three readers who have not seen it, asking the four questions it should answer. Record answers, not opinions.
  5. Fix whatever the disagreements identify, and record what you changed.
  6. Write the handover with the limits, what would change the conclusion, and what you would build next.
