Sometimes the tool should not answer yet

If your request is missing important information, a good next step is not a final answer.

A good next step is questions.

You can tell the tool:

Ask me questions before drafting if anything important is missing.

This is useful when the task depends on context.

When to ask for questions first

Ask for questions first when:

• the audience is unclear;
• the output may affect another person;
• tone matters;
• facts are missing;
• the task has several possible directions;
• you are not sure what format you need;
• privacy or policy may matter.

Example

Weak prompt:

Write a message about the delay.

Better prompt:

Help me draft a message about a delay. Before writing, ask up to five questions that would help you understand the audience, reason for delay, tone, deadline, and what we can promise. Do not draft the message until I answer.

This protects you from a confident but wrong message.

Questions should be limited

Do not ask for endless questions.

Use a limit:

• Ask up to three questions.
• Ask only the questions needed to draft safely.
• Ask one question at a time if the task is complex.

This keeps the workflow practical.

When not to answer questions

If the tool asks for private or confidential information, do not provide it unless the tool and use are approved.

You can answer with safe substitutes:

• "Use a fictional customer name."
• "Assume no private details are available."
• "Use placeholders."
• "Ask for the type of information, not the actual private information."

Prompt pattern

Use this:

I want help with [task]. Before answering, ask up to [number] questions if you need more information. Do not ask for private or sensitive details. If a detail is missing, use a placeholder and list your assumptions separately.
