Practice: complete an AI-use safety checklist
Unit ID: AIT-M11-U05 Estimated active time: 15-20 minutes
The main idea
Safety improves when it becomes a checklist, not a feeling.
A feeling varies with how busy you are. A checklist does not, which is why it is what you want for the decisions that matter.
Why this matters
A checklist also makes the standard shareable. A colleague can apply the same test without having absorbed your judgement first.
Safe example
A workflow is checked for data type, tool approval, review need, bias risk, and stop conditions.
Five checks, each answerable in under a minute.
Better working habit
Complete the checklist before the capstone.
It is quicker to find a problem now than after you have built a workflow around the task.
What to watch for
Do not treat checklist completion as permission for every context.
A checklist passed for an internal draft does not carry over to the same task done for a customer.
Mini practice
Complete a privacy and safety checklist for one real but nonsensitive workflow.
Note anything the checklist stopped, and what you did instead.
Check yourself
Before moving on, answer:
- Which check would I skip if I were rushed?
- Did the checklist stop anything, and what did I do instead?
- Does this result carry over to other contexts, or only this one?
